ICT TRAINING FOR TEACHERS
BRONZE TRAINING MODULE
TRAINING OVERVIEW
This training module is skills based and is designed to introduce and develop good skills and practices in the following areas :
Internet
Word Processing
(Spreadsheets)
(Graphics)
Task switching between applications
Cutting and Pasting
Correct use of hardware
PROFESSIONAL CAPABILITIES
To have completed the needs analysis.
Using Curriculum 2000 document, highlight ICT requirements in own subject area.
What is the Internet, and how can I use it in my teaching ?
Desire to acquire basic software / hardware skills.
PROFESSIONAL OUTCOMES
Use the software / hardware with more confidence.
Good practice in the use of hardware and software.
Become an independent Internet user.
Able to use Word with confidence.
Understanding of appropriate use of ICT.
STUDENT OUTCOMES
No student outcomes at this stage, as this is skills training for teaching staff.
THE BRONZE MODULE
Session One
1. Welcome
Refreshments available.
Registration.
2. Presentation by trainer
Purpose / Introduction to the Bronze Module.
Relationship to learning outcomes.
Relationship to personal professional development.
Structure of module including outcomes for trainees and school.
Resources available.
Support available.
Folder and support material issued.
The use of the LOG BOOK.
Preparing the PORTFOLIO.
3. Demonstration of short tasks
Logging on to the Network.
Using the Desktop and identifying Icons.
Using the Mouse to point and click.
Selecting software (Word).
4. Short practical session
Trainees try things out.
Open a new file in Word, type in some text, SaveAs 'My first worksheet'.
Close application, then select Word, open file, amend, save.
(Very simple exercise, but initial success is important).
5. Introducing the Internet for Trainees own use
Raise issues of "Copyright : an introduction", "The Internet : A parents' guide" and "Promoting the responsible use of the Internet in schools".
General discussion of the Internet.
6. Demonstration of use of the Internet
First stop ~ make it useful, interesting and pertinent. Much initial direction and guidance is needed.
Logon to bbc.co.uk / ngfl.gov.uk / gcse bitesize / thisiscornwall.co.uk
Demonstrate the search facility, how to print off from the screen, and also how to take a worksheet or piece of text into Word, and then modify it.
Direct trainees to the BBC site to look at what is available.
Task is to find a worksheet / piece of text.
Copy this into Word, and modify it for own use.
7. Practical session
Trainees try things out.
8. Plenary session
Review key points covered during training session and iron out any problems if necessary.
Discussion and where next ?
Sort out times for face-to-face meetings.
9. Inter-session task (Homework)
The inter-session task is set as part of your work portfolio and challenges you to use your new skills.
TASK ONE
Now that you have had experience in using the INTERNET, it is important to build upon this new skill.
Identify suitable topics in your own subject area.
Using the Internet, find sites of interest suitable for the topics selected, then bookmark them in favourites.
TASK TWO
Find a selection of single page worksheets to bring to the next session.
These could be handwritten, word processed or professionally produced.
You should be able to discuss the merits and drawbacks of each.

Give advice and guidance with the set inter-session tasks.
Session Two
1. Welcome
Refreshments available.
Registration.
2. Presentation by trainer
Introduction to the second Bronze Training Module.
Set out session structure.
Recap the following :
~ Resources available.
~ Support available.
~ Keeping the LOG and PORTFOLIO up to date.
3. Review the inter-session task
What makes a good worksheet ?
Look at a range of worksheets : handwritten / WP / professionally produced.
Discussion of merits and drawbacks.
4. Demonstration of Word Processing
Logon and load 'My first worksheet'.
Use made of new Font / Point size / Centering / Underline / Bold etc.
5. Practical session
Trainees try things out.
6. Demonstration of task switching
Running more than one application on the computer.
Cutting and pasting between applications.
Using Frames for text and graphics.
7. Practical session
Trainees try things out.
Trainees to use sites bookmarked from inter-session task.
8. Plenary session
Review key points covered during training session and iron out any problems if necessary.
Discussion and where next ?
Sort out times for face-to-face meetings.
Individual or group meetings arranged with trainer to review any particular topic or to sort out any problems encountered while completing work for the portfolio.
9. Inter-session task (Homework)
The inter-session task is set as part of your work portfolio and challenges you to use your new skills.
TASK THREE
Now that you have had experience in identifying and appraising good and bad worksheets: and also in the use of word processing, it is now important to build on these skills.
For this task you must produce a simple eye catching worksheet.
Perhaps starting with a worksheet that has been successfully used before, using your new skills, improve and enhance it by making it more lively.
Perhaps cutting and pasting a worksheet from the Internet and modifying it for your own use.

Deal with individual trainees' needs.
